Professional ethics and practice discipline are the foundation for the long-term development of young lawyers and an inviolable baseline for all legal professionals. On July 9, the Youth Committee of Beijing Longan (Guangzhou) Law Firm specially organized the 14th session of Jixinghui—a seminar on lawyer professional ethics and practice discipline. The event was designed to systematically prevent practice risks and support the long-term career growth of young lawyers. Attorney Ge Xiangrong, Deputy Director of the Management Committee and Senior Partner of Longan Guangzhou, was invited as the keynote speaker. Attorney Chen Luowei, Deputy Director and Secretary-General of the Youth Committee and a Partner, served as the moderator.

At the outset, Attorney Chen Luowei extended a warm welcome to attending colleagues and briefly introduced the core significance of the seminar. He emphasized that professional ethics and practice discipline are the very foundation for legal professionals, and that young lawyers, just entering the profession, are likely to encounter various practice risks, making it essential to solidify compliance awareness and clarify the red lines of practice. He expressed hope that attendees would gain valuable insights and internalize compliance standards.

During the seminar, Attorney Ge Xiangrong first delivered an in-depth explanation of major practice discipline norms and risk types. He systematically reviewed the current laws, regulations, judicial administrative rules, and bar association standards governing lawyer practice, categorizing risks into four types: criminal liability, civil liability, administrative penalties, and industry sanctions. He also presented recent local complaint data to vividly demonstrate the severe consequences of non-compliant practice, guiding attendees to establish a “compliance-first” mindset.

Attorney Ge then focused on common misconducts such as private case acceptance, irregular fee collection, improper promotion, inappropriate statements, and negligent performance of duties, along with the corresponding consequences. He reminded lawyers to avoid paying referral fees, practicing across firms, setting up private client reception points, and other irregular client solicitation practices. He also clarified standardized requirements for issuing legal letters, turning regulatory details into actionable operational standards for daily case handling. In addition, he explained key points such as conflict of interest identification and handling.

Concluding the seminar, Attorney Ge offered four summary requirements for compliant practice: (1) Prohibit all forms of private case acceptance, private fee collection, and failure to issue invoices; (2) Diligently study relevant laws and industry norms, establishing a philosophy of standardized practice for steady and long-term growth; (3) Uphold the law, enhance professional competence, win trust through expertise, earn compensation through capability, and refrain from illegal or unethical conduct; (4) Improve ethical integrity, act in good faith and with diligence, protect clients’ legitimate rights and interests, and avoid one-sided pursuit of economic or immediate gains.

After the presentation, a free exchange and Q&A session followed. Attorney Ge Xiangrong patiently answered questions based on his practical experience, fostering a lively discussion atmosphere.

This seminar closely addressed the real needs of young lawyers, with precise targeting and practical content, effectively strengthening the compliance awareness and risk prevention awareness of Longan Guangzhou’s young lawyers. Moving forward, Longan Guangzhou will continue to offer a series of activities—including special lectures, practical salons, and case studies—to empower young lawyers, build a platform for mutual learning and collaboration, and help every colleague accumulate practical experience, explore business opportunities, and steadily solidify their career foundation, while continuing to provide clients with high-quality and efficient legal services.
