On September 16, the Youth Working Committee of Longan Guangzhou held Session 15 of its “Gathering of Stars” program, themed “The Advancement Path of Intern Lawyers.” The event was organized to help intern lawyers strengthen their practical, all-round capabilities, clarify the practice rules and assessment requirements applicable during internship, and make a steady transition from internship into qualified practice. Wei Guoxiang, senior partner at Longan Guangzhou and an examiner for the oral assessment at the completion of the internship for lawyer practice applicants under the 11th Guangzhou Lawyers Association, gave the keynote presentation. Liu Huan, senior partner at Longan Guangzhou and deputy director of the Youth Working Committee, moderated the event.

At the opening, Liu Huan welcomed the colleagues present. She noted that the internship stage is a critical period for young lawyers to accumulate practical experience and shape their professional thinking, and that sound practice capabilities, a mature approach to casework and thorough preparation for assessment are important safeguards for advancing smoothly into practice. As a signature Youth Working Committee program focused on the growth of intern lawyers, “The Advancement Path of Intern Lawyers” is now in its fifth consecutive year. She encouraged participants to make the most of the session, use the sharing to consolidate the foundations of their practice, and support their steady professional development.

Wei Guoxiang, who has extensive experience in intern lawyer assessment and currently serves as an examiner for the oral assessment at the completion of the internship for lawyer practice applicants under the 11th Guangzhou Lawyers Association, spoke on the theme of “The Advancement Path of Intern Lawyers.” He began with points to note during the internship and methods for case review, advising intern lawyers to value every opportunity to work on a case, to study the relevant law on their own initiative and to research relevant typical cases, so as to complete the transition from theory to practice. He also highlighted the practice “red lines” set out in the Guangdong Measures on the Administration of Internships for Persons Applying to Practice as Lawyers, and clarified the categories of conduct prohibited for interns.
He pointed out that case review is not a simple retelling of the facts of a case, but a second distillation of skills: it should systematically sort through experience, lessons and shortcomings, build up a replicable methodology for handling cases, acknowledge gaps in knowledge, and continue to improve in practical settings such as client communication and court proceedings.

In the section on guidance for the full internship assessment process, Wei Guoxiang covered the preparation of assessment materials, how to respond in the interview, and common risk warnings. Drawing on his experience in assessment and review, he gave guidance on preparing assessment materials, preparing before the interview, and on deportment, etiquette and key points for answering questions during the formal interview. He also drew on typical cases of failure in past assessments to remind intern lawyers to hold firmly to the bottom line of practice and to pay attention to building a lawyer’s professional image, offering practical reference points for approaching the assessment with composure.
After the presentation, the event moved into an open exchange session. Discussion was lively, with participants actively raising questions about difficulties encountered in handling cases during their internships and about preparing for the interview. Wei Guoxiang answered each question in detail, helping to resolve their concerns about practice and career growth.

This session responded directly to the core needs of intern lawyers’ development, covering practice red lines during internship and assessment preparation. The content was professional and practical, and both well-targeted and instructive. Going forward, Longan Guangzhou will continue to make use of the Youth Working Committee platform, keep improving its system for developing young talent, and introduce more high-quality training activities to support the growth of young lawyers.
