On July 24, 2024, the “Entering the Global Market: Business and Intellectual Property Strategy” seminar, jointly organized by the Huangpu District Justice Bureau of Guangzhou City, the Guangzhou Game Industry Association, the Guangdong Private Economy International Cooperation Chamber of Commerce, the IIAI International Intangible Assets Association, Beijing Longan (Guangzhou) Law Firm, and the Longan Bay Zone Law Research Institute, and co-organized by the Longan Bay Zone Intellectual Property Research Center and the Longan Bay Zone ASEAN Law Research Center, was successfully held.

Lawyer Huang Yinen presented on the theme of “Data Collection and Compliance Approaches for Enterprises Operating in Singapore”. He detailed the laws, regulatory authorities, definitions of “personal data” under the Data Collection and Protection Ordinance in Singapore, organizations subject to the ordinance, and data-related obligations. Based on his practical experience, he offered effective suggestions and guidelines for data protection regulations. Then, using three cases of data breaches in Singapore, Lawyer Huang pointed out the key points, penalties, and mitigating factors in data breach cases in Singapore. Finally, Lawyer Huang also introduced the data protection requirements in Indonesia and Thailand, two other popular destinations for Chinese enterprises entering the global market. Through horizontal comparison and vertical analysis, he highlighted the key points for data collection and compliance for enterprises operating in Southeast Asia.

Dr. Chen Weijie presented on the theme of “Enterprise Strategies and Risk Warnings in the EU”. From a strategic macro perspective, he shared reasons why enterprises could consider entering the EU, as well as factors to consider before planning to enter the EU. Then, Dr. Chen compared the differences between enterprises choosing Western and Eastern Europe for entry into the EU. Using his experiences in Portugal, France, and Bulgaria, he explained the geographical features of several European countries. Regarding entering the EU, Dr. Chen suggested that enterprises should make comprehensive and detailed plans, prepare sufficient budgets and timelines, start from small steps, and most importantly, find the right people. Finally, Dr. Chen used a classic line from Star Trek to encourage enterprises to “step into uncharted territories” and expand into the EU market.

Dr. Huang Yuanting presented on the theme of “Utilizing Hong Kong’s Advantages to Help Enterprises Enter the Global Market”. Dr. Huang introduced the data of mainland enterprises operating in Hong Kong in 2023, and detailed the “six strategic advantages” of Hong Kong as a key stage for entering the global market. She discussed core industrial advantages, a stable legal and regulatory framework, an international business environment, a competitive talent pool, a good innovation environment, and policy support. Then, Dr. Huang mentioned that Hong Kong has an international economic and cultural environment, and enterprises entering the global market could consider Hong Kong as a first step for international development. Using common structures and case studies, Dr. Huang emphasized the important functions of Hong Kong as an operational, R&D base, and transformation platform for Chinese enterprises entering the global market.

Lawyer Xie Rong presented on the theme of “E-commerce Entry into the Global Market: Strategies for Protecting Rights on US E-commerce Platforms”. Combining his rich practical experience, Lawyer Xie analyzed common types of infringement in Chinese cross-border e-commerce in the US, the characteristics of infringement cases, and the advantages of litigation. Then, Lawyer Xie detailed the preparations and litigation processes of Chinese rights holders in dealing with infringement, and summarized the experiences and suggestions for related cases, providing a comprehensive overview of how Chinese cross-border e-commerce can protect their rights in the US.

Lawyer Wang Huixia presented on the theme of “Malaysian Investment Practices and Risk Prevention”. Lawyer Wang first briefly introduced the cultural aspects of Malaysia from perspectives such as geography, climate, population, administrative planning, and political system. Then, focusing on the general situation of China-Malaysia trade, Malaysia’s foreign investment access conditions, industries encouraged and restricted by the government, and foreign investment methods, Lawyer Wang suggested that enterprises entering the global market need to understand the access conditions, taxes, and laws of the target country. Then, Lawyer Wang discussed the key points related to investment in Malaysia’s corporate law, tax law, labor law, and land law. Lawyer Wang reminded that when investing in Malaysia, it is necessary to objectively evaluate the investment environment, prepare thoroughly for business registration and obtaining various licenses, and appropriately adjust expectations regarding preferential policies.
This “Entering the Global Market: Business and Intellectual Property Strategy” seminar received extensive attention and active participation from enterprise leaders and legal personnel interested in entering the global market.
