To enrich the cultural life of its colleagues, to help them notice and record beauty, and to strengthen their photographic skills ahead of the National Day photography contest, Beijing Longan (Guangzhou) Law Firm organized a special photography lecture titled Capturing Light and Shadow: The Aesthetics of Light in Portrait Photography. Combining theory with practical techniques and drawing on everyday shooting scenarios, the session helped participants systematically grasp portrait photography methods and use their lenses to document daily life and freeze memorable moments.

The lecture was delivered by Ms. Huahua, a veteran portrait photography instructor. Ms. Huahua has worked in portrait photography for eight years and serves as a contracted photography instructor for Canon, with solid professional grounding and extensive experience in teaching and shooting. The course covered six core areas, including the cultivation of photographic aesthetics, camera fundamentals, smartphone shooting techniques and the use of light, offering comprehensive and highly practical content.

The lecture opened with the core elements of photographic aesthetics. Ms. Huahua shared practical ways to improve one’s visual sense in daily life, such as studying outstanding photographs and films. Through accessible explanations, she encouraged participants to pay attention to composition, the layers of light and shadow, and visual expression, laying a foundation for the equipment, lighting and hands-on portrait practice that followed.

Ms. Huahua then addressed problems commonly encountered in everyday shooting, such as uncertainty about equipment selection, unfamiliarity with parameter settings and inadequate image quality, teaching in an accessible way based on real shooting scenarios. She explained the differences in image quality and performance among various cameras and lenses, outlined approaches to choosing equipment for different situations, and described in detail the characteristics and suitable uses of different focal lengths, helping participants become thoroughly familiar with their gear and select and use photographic equipment accurately according to their shooting needs.

Building on the equipment discussion, Ms. Huahua focused on the core technical parameters of photography. Around the three key settings of aperture, shutter speed and ISO, she explained the logic of parameter adjustment and how the settings work together, guiding participants toward standard exposure and helping them avoid common problems such as overexposure, underexposure and blur. She also carefully explained methods for setting color temperature and white balance, which are easily overlooked in daily shooting, helping participants control the tonal layers of an image and steadily improve overall image quality and final results.

Given the frequent use of smartphones for everyday photography, Ms. Huahua shared several simple and practical techniques for shooting portraits with a phone. The course then turned to light, a central concern of photography, systematically explaining how natural light and ambient light affect portrait images. Using a large number of real shooting examples, she compared the results produced by front light, side light and backlight, and guided participants to make flexible use of everyday light to improve their images and produce portraits of distinctive quality.

For the stiff poses and lifeless images that commonly trouble portrait photographers, Ms. Huahua explained professional methods of directing subjects. Drawing on different shooting scenarios, she shared practical techniques for engaging emotion and guiding posture, showing participants how natural communication can help subjects relax and express themselves, effectively avoiding forced posing and capturing portraits that are more natural, vivid and alive.

An interactive Q&A session was held at the end of the lecture. Colleagues raised questions based on the problems they had encountered in their own shooting, and Ms. Huahua answered each one in detail, offering targeted suggestions for improvement drawn from her own experience. The exchange on site was lively.

Rich in content and closely tied to everyday practice, the lecture was both professional and practical. It helped participants fill gaps in their photographic skills and further improved their personal aesthetic sense and real-world shooting ability. Longan Guangzhou will continue to hold a variety of cultural, sports and aesthetic education activities, creating a quality platform where colleagues can relax, develop their interests and exchange ideas outside of busy work, and enabling them to discover passions and appreciate the beauty of life beyond their professional duties.
