To enrich the cultural life of the firm’s colleagues, help them discover and record beauty, and strengthen their photography fundamentals so they could take part more effectively in the National Day photography contest, Beijing Longan (Guangzhou) Law Firm organized a special photography lecture titled Capturing Light and Shadow: Lighting Aesthetics in Portrait Photography. Combining theoretical knowledge with practical technique and geared to everyday shooting situations, the lecture was intended to help colleagues systematically grasp portrait photography methods and use their cameras with confidence to document daily life and freeze memorable moments.

Ms. Huahua, an experienced portrait photography instructor, was invited to teach on site. Ms. Huahua has worked in portrait photography for eight years and serves as a Canon specially invited photography instructor, with solid professional grounding and extensive experience in teaching and on-location shooting. The course was organized around six core areas, including the cultivation of photographic aesthetics, camera fundamentals, smartphone shooting techniques and the use of light and shadow, offering comprehensive knowledge points and strong practical relevance.

The lecture opened with the core elements of photographic aesthetics, as Ms. Huahua shared practical ways to sharpen one’s visual sense in daily life, such as studying outstanding photographic works and films. Through accessible explanations, she guided participants to pay attention to composition, layers of light and shadow, and visual expression, laying a foundation for the equipment, lighting and hands-on portrait sessions that followed.

Ms. Huahua then addressed problems commonly encountered in everyday shooting, such as uncertainty about equipment selection, unfamiliarity with parameter settings and unsatisfactory image quality, and taught in plain terms based on real shooting scenarios. She explained systematically how different cameras and lenses differ in image quality and performance, outlined approaches to choosing equipment for various situations, and described in detail the characteristics and suitable applications of different focal lengths, helping participants understand their gear well enough to select and use it accurately according to shooting needs.

Building on the equipment session, Ms. Huahua focused on the core parameters of photography, explaining in detail the logic of adjustment and the ways in which aperture, shutter speed and ISO work together, so that participants could master standard exposure and avoid common problems such as overexposure, underexposure and blur. She also addressed color temperature and white balance settings, which are easily overlooked in daily shooting, patiently passing on adjustment methods and selection techniques to help participants control the tone and gradation of an image and steadily improve overall image quality and final results.

Given the frequent use of smartphones in daily shooting, Ms. Huahua highlighted a number of simple and practical smartphone portrait techniques. The course also concentrated on the core photographic subject of light and shadow, explaining systematically how natural light and ambient light affect a portrait and, through numerous real shooting examples, comparing the results of front light, side light and back light. Participants were guided to make flexible use of everyday light to improve their images and produce portraits of notable quality.

As for the stiff postures and lifeless framing that commonly affect portrait shoots, Ms. Huahua explained professional methods of directing a subject. Drawing on different shooting scenarios, she shared practical techniques for setting the mood and guiding posture, showing how natural communication can help a subject relax and appear at ease, avoiding forced posing and capturing more natural, vivid and expressive portraits.

The lecture concluded with an interactive question-and-answer session. Colleagues raised questions arising from their own shooting experience, and Ms. Huahua answered each practical concern in detail, offering targeted suggestions based on her own shooting experience. The discussion on site was lively.

The lecture was rich in content and closely tied to day-to-day practice, combining professionalism with practicality. It helped participants fill gaps in their photography skills and further improved their personal aesthetic sense and on-location shooting ability. Longan Guangzhou will continue to hold a variety of cultural, sports and aesthetic education activities, offering colleagues a quality platform to relax, develop their interests and exchange ideas outside their busy work, so that they can pursue personal passions and appreciate the good things in life beyond their working hours.
